Selecting a location

When choosing the right site for a garden, the most important factor to consider is the sun. The ideal spot for a garden is an area exposed to the south. When a garden has a southern exposure the sun is warm all day long . If you are planting vegetables and flowers and you want them to experience as much sun as possible, plant in rows running north and south. Planting this way means that the plants get the sun rays all morning on the east side and all afternoon on the west. In this way, you won’t have plants that grow lopsided because they had been straining towards the sun.

If you garden is facing south east you will miss out on the western side for sun, so to get the best distribution of sunlight plant rows of vegetables and flowers, north west and south east

If you are unfortunate to have a garden that is north facing would be important to select plants that do well in the shade rather that in direct sunshine.

The amount of sun that your garden receives during the day is an important factor in your selection of plants. If you have a sunny spot in your garden choose sun loving plants. So  do some research to find which plants will do well in your particular garden location.

If you are starting a garden from scratch. It’s a good idea to plan it out on paper first. Decided that kind of plants that you want to buy and draw out their position on paper. This will save you time and help you buy the right number of plants for the garden.

Typically, when starting a new garden, the site through your garden is covered with grass and weeds. If your new garden covers a large area, the best approach is to plow the ground and turn the sod underneath. You should be able to rent a small machine to do this, and it certainly will save a lot of time, effort and backache.

If you have a small garden, you should remove the grass rather than turning the turf underneath. First stake corners of the area to be planted and mark the area by tying string to the stakes. The string line will give you an accurate and straight line to follow. Then cut the edges with a spade all the way along the line. Then cut the area remaining into strips using the spade Once it has been cut you should be able to roll up the turf like a carpet

If the roots are too deep to roll back and cut it into squares and dig it out with the spade. Don’t throw the turf away because it’s full of good nutrients that can be put to good use later. Instead find an inconspicuous spot in the garden and make a heap of the turf pieces with the grass side down. During the spring summer and fall, this will start to decompose and disintegrate, and you will have healthy nutritious soil that you can add back to the garden next year.

Now it’s time to dig through the soil to break up all the main lumps. As you dig lift the soil up to get as much air into it as possible as it falls back down to the ground. Remove any roots and large stones, and any remaining weeds that you see, as you turn the soil over. It’s important to break down all the large of soil. You may need to use a hoe to break up lumps. When you have finished  rake the area over to make sure that there are no large lumps of soil remaining.

After you have finished digging your new garden plot, it is advisable to add some rotted manure or compost to add nutrients to the soil. You want to give your new plants the best possible start in their new home.

With a little careful planning, you can have a productive and healthy  vegetable garden, and then enjoy plenty of delicious homegrown vegetables all the way from spring through fall.

When starting vegetable gardening, keep in mind these tips to help you get the best results. To get the most yield of vegetables in your  garden consider the type of vegetables you would like and also the time it takes for them to mature. The best thing to do is to plant quick  growing vegetables such as green onions and radishes, with slower growing crops such as broccoli or cauliflower. This helps you to have as much produce as possible, and at the same time taking up the smallest amount of space in your garden.

It’s also important that you don’t plant too many vegetables on your vegetable plot or plant them too close together. The reason for this is that if vegetables are overcrowded they won’t be able to get enough of  the sunlight water and nutrients that they need to grow into healthy and strong plants.

Sunshine is one of the most important elements for your plants to keep healthy. It is even more important when growing vegetables and so when selecting the location of your vegetable garden be sure to choose a site that will receive at least 6 to 8 hours of sunshine daily.

critical in growing good tasty vegetables. You can improve your soil by adding generous amounts of compost or rotted manure . Adding organic material to your garden helps to moisten the soil and adds more nutrients.

With any type of gardening, watering is very important. You can of course water the plants yourself, but if you have a larger garden and limited time, you might want to install an irrigation system, which will water the plants regularly for you. A benefit of having an irrigation system is that it provides the water directly to where it is most beneficial which is at the root level of the plant.

When you plan your garden you want to picture out what kind of landscape design style do you want to have. Do you like straight lines or curves? Do you want a formal design or just a mix of casual flowers? Make your house as the starting point when planning your garden. Do you have a country-style home, a contemporary home, or a traditional house? Depending on the kind of house you have, you will know what kind of garden suits it best.

Make wider flower beds for the plants to flourish. Let the plants grow with wider spaces so that they will not look too crowded. It should be wide enough to have three layers to give that lush effect you want to achieve. The wider the flower bed, the better and if it’s a long bed it should also be just as wide as it should be.

Do you like to have an island bed or a flower border? An island bed usually has flowers planted in the middle of your lawn. Flowers are arranged in a nice proportion so that they will look good from all sides. A perennial flower border is when flowers are planted against a backdrop like beside the fence, a wall of a house or at a hedge of your patio. When you have a small yard, flower borders are always a pleasant site.

Keep in mind that plants love the sun. They need at least six hours of sunlight daily. But if sunlight is scarce in your area, get some plants that flourish best with shade.

Many yards have areas of both sun and shade, so keep that in mind too when considering plants. Your garden plan should always take the amount of light into consideration. This makes a big difference to what will grow well for you.
